Case Study: Thermoline's Climatron Cabinets in Plant Research at Deakin University

The Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts at Deakin University required specialised equipment to support plant research within their biotechnology and bioinformatics department. The lab focused on cultivating Arabidopsis thaliana, which required precise environmental control for temperature and humidity, making Thermoline's Climatron cabinets a strong candidate.

Challenge

The Centre was setting up a new laboratory with a limited budget, partially funded by a grant with specific spending constraints. They required a controlled plant growth environment that could accommodate varying lighting options, temperature, and humidity without CO₂ control. Budget constraints set an allowable range, with a preference for a cabinet offering maximum capacity within this limit.

Solution

Thermoline’s sales team worked closely with the Centre to determine the ideal cabinet. After confirming the need for temperature and humidity control but excluding CO₂, Thermoline provided tailored recommendations for two models:

  • Single-Door Climatron-520-SL-H: Suitable for controlled growth environments within a compact space.
  • Double-Door Climatron-1100-SL-H: Offers additional capacity, supporting higher research scalability for larger growth projects.

Thermoline offered three types of LED lighting options for optimal plant growth: 4000K, LEAF, and BLOOM. The customer selected the 4000K lighting option, which best suited their Arabidopsis cultivation needs. To meet the grant's financial limitations, a custom quote approach enabled Deakin University to maximise its grant funding while acquiring the optimal cabinet size.

With the Climatron cabinet, the Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts now has a reliable environment for controlled plant growth, which is essential for ongoing research in biotechnology and bioinformatics. The double-door cabinet's large capacity allows for efficient research scaling, and the custom quote structure allowed the lab to stay within budget without compromising on quality or capacity.

Client Feedback

"Thermoline’s flexibility and attention to our specific needs made a significant difference in setting up our lab. Their Climatron cabinets are well-suited to our research needs, and the Thermoline team went above and beyond to help us maximise our grant funding."
