Recirculating Fume Cabinet RFC

The Australian Made RFC Series cabinets have been developed to protect laboratory staff and the environment from toxic vapours, gases, fumes and particles.

These cabinets are designed and manufactured to fully comply with Australian Standard AS2243.9: Recirculating Fume Cabinets.

Overview

Thermoline's Recirculating Fume Cabinets (RFC) are designed for versatile, safe, and efficient handling of hazardous fumes and vapours in various laboratory and medical environments. Suitable for benchtop use, these cabinets are available with or without a stainless-steel work tray, offering flexibility for different installations.

Key Features:

  • Versatile Installation:

    • Benchtop Use: Supplied with a stainless-steel work tray for direct use on laboratory benches.
    • Over Equipment: Can be installed over sinks or other equipment when supplied without the work tray.
    • Mobile Trolley/Stand: Special trolleys or stands allow for easy mobility, making them ideal for hospitals and large research institutions where materials such as glutaraldehyde are used in multiple locations.

  • Airflow and Filtration:

    • Inward Air Velocity: Maintained at > 0.5 m/s +/-20% for effective fume capture in both benchtop and trolley-mounted installations.
    • Filtered Exhaust Air: Typically discharged back into the room, avoiding air supply system complications associated with ducted cabinets. Alternatively, the exhaust can be connected to an external duct system if necessary.

  • Advanced Filtration System:

    • Two-Stage Filtration: Prefilter protects the final filter system by arresting particulates > 5µm.
    • Activated Carbon Filter: Incorporates chemically impregnated carbon granules optimised for specific vapours. Handles a wide range of contaminants including formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, alkaline odours, ammonia, amines, inorganic acids, H2S, mercaptans, and HCN.
    • Special Adsorption Filters: Chemical impregnation creates a reaction similar to oxidation, extending filter life and maintaining efficacy.

  • Durable Construction:

    • Outer Casing: Galvanised steel powder-coated to AS2700 standards.
    • Work Zone: Constructed from 304 stainless steel with a removable aluminium screen in front of the prefilter.

  • User-Friendly Controls:

    • Variable Speed Controller: Regulates a direct-drive motor/blower, maintaining consistent airflow throughout the filter's life.
    • Prefilter Service Indicator: Warning light in the control panel signals when prefilter service is needed.

  • Sizes Available:

    • 900mm Width: Suitable for standard applications.
    • 1200mm Width: Offers a larger work zone for more extensive tasks.

Applications:

  • Hospital and Clinical Settings: Ideal for endoscope sterilisation and handling glutaraldehyde in multiple locations.
  • Laboratory Use: Effective for handling a variety of chemical fumes and vapours in research and testing environments.

Maintenance and Certification:

Thermoline's RFC cabinets are factory-tested to ensure compliance and performance. Additional testing and certification are recommended:

  • On-site prior to use.
  • After any electrical or mechanical maintenance.
  • After filter replacement.
  • After relocation.
  • At least annually.
  • In special circumstances, such as suspected faulty operation.

Thermoline Recirculating Fume Cabinets are designed to provide robust, efficient, and flexible solutions for managing hazardous fumes and vapours in various settings. Their advanced filtration system, versatile installation options, and durable construction make them an excellent choice for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. Choose Thermoline RFC cabinets for reliable fume management in your laboratory or medical facility.

Support & FAQs

At Thermoline, we strive to supply helpful customer support to ensure that you get the most out of our products. We are committed to providing whatever support our customers need, wherever they are in the world. If you can't find your solution in the below FAQs or Knowledge Base, please contact our friendly support team.

Where are the clean air cabinets supplied by Thermoline manufactured?
All of the cabinets we supply are Australian Made by AES Environmental. AES has several manufacturing locations in Australia, and all of the Laminar Flow and High-Efficiency Filtration products are produced in their Minto, NSW facility.
What is fume cupboard used for?
Fume cupboards are used widely in laboratories and are designed to capture and remove airborne hazardous substances generated during laboratory experiments (e.g. gases, vapours, aerosols, biohazards and particulates/dust).
Can Thermoline arrange installation and commissioning of my cabinet?
Yes. Our suppliers have service divisions in most Australian states and territories and relies on qualified partners for other geographical locations. Each team is capable of providing on-site installation and NATA certification.
What is a carbon filter used for in laboratory fume cabinets?

The primary function of a carbon filter in a laboratory fume cabinet is to adsorb and remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals that may be released into the air. Carbon filters typically contain activated carbon, a highly porous form of carbon with a large surface area. The large surface area of activated carbon allows it to adsorb a wide range of chemicals from the air, including VOCs, odours, and gases.

The carbon filter in a laboratory fume cabinet is usually located in the exhaust system, which removes chemicals from the air before it is exhausted to the outside environment. This helps to minimise the risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals for both the user and the environment.
